First of all if you EVER come to Jackson, MI you have to come to Virginia Coney Island for a coney. Locals know how to order it. But this is 100% honest so there will be some bad in it. I’ve been going to it for as long as I can remember. It’s on a main stretch of road and right near a 2nd coney island (review on that one later).
So to start Jackson has a few different coney islands and no 2 coneys taste the same. We have Alpha, Roosters, Andy’s, Virginia, Jackson, and another Andy’s. So yeah we big on our coneys here.
So to start: if you like onions just order as it comes or say extra. But if you anything like me and HATE onions that aren’t deep fried, say without. Like I said locals know the code for it. It comes with mustard and take it from someone who HATES mustard, you gonna want it.
They are meant to be messy. So the hot dogs are always steamed and grilled. You never notice the grilled. No 2 coneys will look 100% the same. As you can see but the taste is amazing.
They have a variety of side options from typical french fries (crinkle cut and good) to onion rings. They have salads (never personally had one). The onion rings are always crispy and fresh and good. Never had a bad batch yet. Fries however…I have had them give me burnt ones during rush times. No complaints honestly since I can’t really blame them when they’re pushing out an order for 300 hot dogs, 150 coneys, a lot of onion rings, chips, and some caned pop. So I wasn’t mad. You never wait very long on your food. I think the longest was 15 minutes and that was again during rush. You can call ahead but I recommend going in sitting in the old dinner style restaurant and just meet the wait staff.
So they have breakfast to. My personal favorite since I am allergic to eggs is smothered potatoes (order it as american fries with sausage gravy the name hasn’t stuck yet). Amazing. They have a thick but not too thick gravy and the potatoes are always good.
Now here is the real kicker, all the food you just say plus a cup of coffee and a pop only cost $14.75. The price on the menu is the price you will pay. Tax included in the price. It’s been the same price…forever I think. Since I can remember any way. After the pictures of the menu I will describe the bad times I have had and what to look out for besides burnt fries.
So the bad:
You can hear everything the staff is saying. There is limited parking in front and back. Single stall style bathrooms. The staff isn’t always nice. You might have to catch their attention for refills.
But overall this place will make you feel welcomed and it has a map that if you’re an out of towner you can stick a pin in it to show how far you’ve come to try their delicious food. The owners are a nice older couple who still work there on occasion. It’s voted #1 in the city and #5 in the state. It is my personal favorite and each coney island has different prices and cost a lot more. So if you’re on a budget like me, this is a good place to sit, get a cup of coffee, and have a nice filling meal.
